The beaver is a sacred animal, which could be a human hiding inside the animal. During a runaway it was possible to hide in the water and turn into a beaver. The beaver is also known for its diligence. Beavers are believed to have healing and protective powers and to be able to banish the evil water spirit called the water pixie.
